Conquering the “Cuernos de Negros”: My 3-Day Adventure to Mount Talinis
My First Major Hike is in Mount Talinis - A Birthday I’ll Never Forget
Last year, I wanted something different for my birthday. No parties, no cake — just nature and adventure. So I joined a hiking event to Mount Talinis, one of the most beautiful mountains in Negros. It was my first major hike, and it became one of the most unforgettable birthdays of my life.
This hike was organized by LSL, a Cebu-based group. We paid a full package that included everything — the boat ride, local guides, food, and transport. It made the trip smooth and stress-free.
Getting There: From Cebu to Dumaguete
The adventure started in Pier 3, Cebu City, where we boarded a ship heading to Dumaguete Port. We traveled at night and slept on the ship, which took around 4 to 5 hours.
When we arrived in Dumaguete early in the morning, we had dinner at a local eatery, then rented a jeepney to take us to the jump-off point in Valencia. Everyone was excited, and though we were still sleepy, the cool air and the thought of the hike ahead kept us energized.
Day 1: Lakeside Camp
Our first day was spent hiking up to Lake Yagumyum and Lake Nailig. The trail was steep and muddy, but beautiful. We passed by forests, small streams, and even heard birds and monkeys along the way.
We reached Lake Nailig in the afternoon and set up camp near the water. The lake was calm, and the mountain air was cold but refreshing. We cooked food, shared stories, and rested by the peaceful lakeside. Sleeping there under the stars was a birthday memory I’ll treasure forever.
Day 2: A Day at the Ranch
On the second day, we hiked to a wide open space called The Ranch. It was a change of scenery — instead of trees, we were surrounded by grasslands and hills. The air was fresh, and the view of the sky was wide and clear.
We rested, took pictures, and simply enjoyed the peaceful vibe. We watched the sunset from a small hill, and the colors were amazing. It was one of those quiet moments that makes you feel thankful to be alive. As we followed the Apolong Trail, we came across the Kaipohan Sulfur Vents, a spot that looked like it came from another planet. The ground was warm, steam came out of the cracks, and the air smelled like sulfur.
Day 3: Twin Lake and The Way Down
On our last day, we made our way to the famous Twin Lake. The trail was tricky, with slippery paths and steep parts, but the view of the twin lakes made it worth it. The water was deep and still, surrounded by thick forest.
After taking photos and enjoying the last moments in the mountains, we started the long hike down. Everyone was tired but happy. I couldn’t believe I made it — three days in the mountains, celebrating my birthday with nature and good people.
What I Learned
This hike taught me so much. I learned how to be strong even when I was tired. I learned to enjoy silence, fresh air, and simple food. Most of all, I learned to be present and grateful.
Thank you to LSL for organizing this amazing event. Mount Talinis will always have a special place in my heart.
